PERSONALITY:
This is Hiccup. Hiccup is a viking. But before you go on expecting all of the big, rough'n tough, burly behavior that vikings have been stamped with for centuries,

just step back and prepare yourselves.

    Prepared yet? Yeah? Okay, good.

Hiccup isn't considered what most see as the usual sort of viking. For one thing, he's small (by viking standards, anyway). And on top of that, scrawny too. Those two things alone make him less than the typical viking. Add general awkwardness, and you've basically got the village pariah. But none of these have ever stopped him from attempting to become the best damn viking in the world. Or at least on Berk. And on Berk, there's one thing above all the rest that will surely get you noticed. As a young viking, you're nothing until you've taken down a dragon. Respect, your father's pride, and a girlfriend come as a packaged deal with this accomplishment. And it is something Hiccup has worked his butt off at, with very few decent results. There is a reason his name is Hiccup, and it's not simply because it runs in the family (nor is it all that effective in the scaring away of gnomes and trolls). Simply put, whenever he's around, one bad thing after another occurs, often escalating in size and terribleness. Could just be horrible bad luck, but the Tribe chooses to associate it with him instead.

Of all the rotten, well, luck.

A desperate desire to prove himself is what most often keeps Hiccup going. The only child of Stoick the Vast, chief of the Hairy Hooligans tribe, and a man who practically secretes vikingness from his very pores, it's easy to say Hiccup has big shoes to fill. It was said that when Stoick was born, he took a dragon's head clean off. And does Hiccup believe it? You betcha. Hence the continuous desire to prove himself, to not only his tribe, but his tougher than nails father as well. Because of this, he never often thinks things, eventually leading to problems. And, as it was aforementioned, one problem from Hiccup usually means two more are about to follow. His antics in the past may have gotten him noticed, sure, but did they grant him respect? Hel no.

He's not exactly considered the best when it comes to physical confrontations, either. Because of his stature and size, most write him off as invaluable right away. And they're sort of right. Hiccup himself acknowledges that he can't fight to save his life, even though there are times when he's more than desperate enough to try. Most of the time, he does what he can to avoid conflict, resigning that he would just make a mess of things.

Incredibly smart and knowledgeable, Hiccup often puts the things he learns to very practical uses. He has it in him to make an excellent leader in the future, but still lacks in some of the confidence to get him there. It's thanks to Toothless that he really began to gain any confidence to begin with.

For all that seems to make Hiccup a rather underwhelming viking only makes him one hell of a dragon whisperer. He's compassionate and patient, often letting the dragon make the first move (and no, it's not just because they are intensely bigger than him though yeah it kind of is). He saw in Toothless that dragons were just as scared of vikings as they were of them, fighting back solely to protect themselves. He can sympathize with those around him, especially if they are mistreated and misunderstood. Because he knows how it feels to be at the brunt end of that, and dislikes the idea of anyone he's close to or cares about to feel that way.

Hiccup is the first viking in over three hundred years to not kill a dragon. Because he saw himself in a familiar place - lost, and scared.

Viking stubbornness. It's a trait shared amongst all the people of Berk, as well as every other viking beyond the island. It's what kept them on Berk for seven generations when they believed the dragons to be their enemies, choosing to fight rather than flee. They're a proud people, and it's one of the few things Hiccup has in common with the rest of his village. He was persistent when it came to proving himself, and even more so when it came to defending the dragons (Toothless especially). He was unwavering when asked if he would protect his closest companion over the destructive desires of his tribe. For Hiccup, there was no other option, even if that meant life or death.

He does have a fuse when it comes to frustrations and anger, and a remarkably short one at times, at that. Being a doormat for half of your life will do that to you. He hated knowing he was a failure as a viking, and knowing that he was a disappointment to his father. He despised being left out, yet had no idea what to do once placed in the situation. Stoick's way of sheltering his young son for most of his life was passing him off to Gobber as an apprentice. Most of the time, Gobber was lenient, even allowing Hiccup to vent to him when his frustrations reached a boiling point. But when it came to dragon raids, Gobber was like the rest of the village, thinking it would be better to keep Hiccup inside for not only his own safety, but that of the village's as well.

More sarcasm than he can shovel. It's one of his few defenses against those who believe they can knock him down. Spending half of his life feeling like a problem everyone feels obligated to deal with, one can imagine he's quite good at it. If not overly intimidated or tongue-tied, he often has a snarky (border lining on snippy) remark up his sleeve. It all comes with age, because hey, while he may be a viking, he's still a teenager too. He's shy, awkward, and is still at times going through the thrill of knowing that his crush finally notices him. He's reserved, and not exactly the most outspoken person in the bunch. Talking to people he doesn't know can be difficult, but once there's a friendship layer between them, it can be difficult to shut him up. Not because he wants to keep talking - he just tends to babble when he's nervous or over-excited.

ABILITIES:
intelligence - easily Hiccup is considered one of the smartest people on Berk, as it has been proven that he is capable of feats no other viking can do (most notably, training dragons). Often, he uses logic rather than strength to help give him the upper hand in a situation, and while it may backfire at times, that doesn't stop him from trying again. His other abilities stem from this trait.

dragon tamer - it's what sets Hiccup apart from the other vikings. Rather the slay a dragon, like any other viking would have, Hiccup saw something that made him realize they weren't so different from one another. With time and effort, he and the Night Fury (Toothless) formed a bond stronger than any friendship either one had ever experienced. Hiccup makes dragons trust him by not using their fear against them. It's as simple as that.

inventor -a skill Hiccup calls upon often when it comes to flying with Toothless, as he is constantly finding new ways to improve on the makeshift tail he created to help his friend fly better. It is thanks to his apprenticeship with Gobber (long time family friend and village blacksmith) that his techniques at forging and building have improved, making him capable of inventing various different weapons to telescopes. Very practical objects, that he often slaves at for days in order to perfect them.

artist - Hiccup is rarely without his sketchbook and charcoal pencil, allowing him to sketch just about whenever he pleases. This is something that easily goes hand in hand with his inventing, as he can often be seen sketching new ideas that cross his mind.

fighting - in all honesty, the kid can't fight to save his soul. He can hardly lift any of the usual weapons in a vikings arsenal, let alone actually use one. Which is why many of his inventions pre-Toothless are seen as defensive weapons, logical and well-planned so that it does most of the work for him.

strategist - his bright mind and quick thinking gives Hiccup the perfect frame of thought for becoming an excellent strategist, as proven with his ability to lead his fellow viking teens in the battle against the Red Death. He has very good observational skills, often capable of putting two and two together with just a few clues to back him up. The perfect skill for a future chief, if you really boil down to it.

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
Hiccup didn't want to open his eyes. If he did, the last thing he wanted was for it all to have turned out to have just been a dream - a vivid, crazy, terrifying, amazing dream.

Taking down a Night Fury. Dragon training. Befriending Toothless. Astrid touching him, talking to him, her indescribable scent mingling with the fresh air of the open sky. His father's pride. Plummeting to the earth, ash filling his lungs and choking his throat until the world turned white, then pitch black. Agony shooting up and down his left leg...

Hiccup forced his eyes open. His room looked as it always did in the mornings and the evenings - windowless and dark. Only one thing made a notable difference.

A large pair of golden eyes glowed down at him.

Hiccup cracked a tired grin. A pleased feeling bloomed in his chest. He's real. It's all real. It all... "Hey bud," he said, removing his arm from beneath the blanket and stretching it out. The familiar feel of sleek dark scales met his palm. Toothless gave a questioning rumble, a feeling that seemed to reverberate through Hiccup's entire system.

"I'm fine. Just a... really weird dream."

The warmth against his skin disappeared. Confused, Hiccup sat up. His eyes adjusted to the darkness. It had only been a week since he had awoken from his deep sleep, and as a show of good-will (and regret, it seemed. Hiccup kept seeing regret), Stoick had allowed Toothless to keep Hiccup company in his room at night. Something that wouldn't last for much too longer, that much he was certain of, but still. His Dad was trying, really trying to understand him. Not just him, but the dragons as well. It really was almost too good to be true.

His gaze found Toothless. The dragon had hunched himself down, making himself appear smaller than he actually was. It was a look Hiccup knew all too well.

"Ah, Toothless, no. Don't do that to yourself, bud," Hiccup said despairingly. "Not that. I wasn't dreaming about that."

Toothless' soft growl of response said he believed otherwise.

Hiccup huffed. "Wow. Can't lie to my dad, can't lie to a dragon. Looks like I've still got it." Pushing the blanket off of him, he swung his legs over the side of the bed. And there it was. The dull thump of a single boot hitting the wooden floor, accompanied with the unfamiliar, harder sound of metal thunking against it. He reminded himself not to wince, rising as easily as he could to his feet. Gobber insisted that he would get the hang of standing and walking on it in no time. That still didn't mean the training wheels process wasn't one of the most aggravating times of his life. He'd much rather go through training another dragon than any of this.

(And given the state of the new pets outside, there was no doubt that he'd have to get on that again soon).

But right now he had a friend that needed him more.

    "Toothless..."

The dragon huffed, eerily similar to Hiccup's own reaction just moments before.

    "Toothless."

Carefully, Hiccup moved towards him, keeping his right arm outstretched. But Toothless refused to lift his great head. Instead, he nosed gently at Hiccup's bad leg. The owner's shoulders dropped, and he managed to chide, "You need to stop beating yourself up over this, bud. I'm fine. Now would you look at me, please?"

It took some of that dragon stubbornness, but the Night Fury did as he was asked, blinking dolefully. Hiccup leaned against him, knowing full well that he could support his weight.

"You saved my life, bud. End of story. Now," he said, straightening his posture. "If you're done moping--" (that earned him a slightly less gentle nudge) "feel like going for a fly now? Or do you want Snotlout and Hookfang to act all smug because they didn't see us out there at breakfast?"

He grinned at the response that earned.

"Alright, let's get going." Hiccup darted for the door. Toothless remained behind. The young viking turned back questioningly.

Toothless tiled his head. He leaned back so that the majority of his weight was shifted to his tail, making it appear as though he balanced solely on the one appendage. Hiccup rolled his eyes, hiding his slightly smaller grin.

"Oh, now you're just showing off."

He acted like he couldn't hear Toothless snicker.
